Fantastic Mr. Fox

Fantastic Mr. Fox was done by Wes Anderson, a master of the whimsy and the color palette. Each and every one of his films is strangely entertaining and also quite beautiful. The colors are sad but engaging, they evoke a filmmaker who is trenchantly involved in his own style. Fantastic Mr. Fox is no exception to this wonder. Actually, it's probably his best film. It might seem like a farce for children, but every bit of dialogue and texture is thought out and adult. Each and every character looks like you could reach out and touch them, the film looks more 3D than any movie hollywood will churn out this year. It follows the escapade of Mr. Fox (voiced perfectly by George Clooney) who used to be a chicken thief and wants to go on that last mission. But there's a lot more going on. His nephew Kristofferson is overshadowing his son Ash and perhaps Mr. Fox hasn't been the best father. His wife (Meryl Streep) is wary of his activities, and a deer-in-the-headlights badger is practically conjoined at the hip to Mr. Fox. After the badger and Mr. Fox rob all of these chicken houses, the owners begin ridiculous ways to kill the foxes. This causes for a lot of excitement and enjoyable colored humor. It's such a beautiful film, and Anderson does what he has failed to do in some of his other films. He has balance. The film is always entertaining but doesn't plow into our heads that it's being original. The entire film was done in stop-animation, one of the oldest mediums in film. It's one of the best movies of 2009.
