Crazy Heart

Nothing of much importance happens in Crazy Heart. It's a tribute of a film: predictable and amusing, but done so well and with such a great actor that it becomes something more. With songs by the decent T. Bone Burnett and the raspy voice a washed-up country singer requires, Jeff Bridges captivates. It's the standard story: washed up past-celebrity tries to simultaneously juggle his career, failing health, and the people he loves. In one damn-good scene, Bridges loses the son of the woman he loves (Maggie Gyllenhaal) in a mall. His fear is real here, it is evoked so well by an actor who knows what he's doing. Bridges is the movie. The story merely forms around his character--so in control and yet so hopeless. Like I said--nothing much happens here. It is the character and the interest Bridges forces us to embrace that makes the film good.
Crazy Heart: ★★★1/2
