Thursday night I went to go and see Black Swan for the second time. At the end of the screening (which I had found as absorbing and gorgeous as the first time I saw it) Mark Heyman did a Q&A. He's one of the three screenwriters of the film, and even from Santa Fe. Here's the jist of what I learned:
1. The meat of the film is in dualism. Black vs. White, Good vs. Evil, Young vs. Old
2. Darren Aronofsky is a director who knows exactly what he wants and commissions people like Mr. Heyman to write exactly what he wants.
3. Mark Heyman spent months at the Ballet Center in New York City. He observed and made up his mind about the world in a brief period--he got it right.
4. Direction means a lot in a movie, for the screenplay is just the bones of a movie.
5. Santa Feans are arrogant and show-offy
6. Black Swan is a fantasy film
7. Take away from Black Swan two things: Perfectionism and Obsession
8. Black Swan is one of the best films of the year, and Darren Aronofsky's best movie. The collaborative effort did this film well.
